Have We Met?

Have you ever had an encounter with someone where, at the end of a “It’s nice to meet you,” you felt the other person had sized you up, evaluated your characteristics, and placed you in a category, where you were not going to “seize the day”? That’s actually a sin of presumption, which Psalm 19:13 (NASB) petitions the Lord, “Also keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins; let them not rule over me; then I will be blameless of great wrongdoing.” Sadly, for the other party, he never gave himself a chance to know the wonder of God’s creation in you.

My friend and I once met a worship leader at a women’s retreat. We admired her calling to lead worshippers to the Throne Room of Heaven and complimented her. She remarked that we were lucky not to have such an upfront calling. After all, she had to be dressed well with hair and makeup prepared all the time, but we didn’t. What?! Was that an insult? We were dressed up and looking our best, too.  I know she meant well and was just self-focused at the time. Let’s give her grace and call it one of those bad moments we all have.

The point is that we are not defined by another person’s perception of us. Our own thoughts about ourselves don’t even define us. Our Creator, God alone, has that privilege, and He calls His creation (us) “GOOD.” So, let’s throw off misperceptions and start reciting our identity as He sees us. Since we are in Jesus, who is the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), He has a deeper understanding of the characteristics, gifts, talents, and how the challenges we overcome in our lives mold us, as well as the uniqueness that makes us special. The identity Jesus has given us brings us acceptance, security, and significance, regardless of our circumstances.

If you struggle with this, Infusion Ministries has wallet-sized reminder cards that list a few of the Biblical scriptures that state the identity Jesus Christ has provided. The cards offer an easy way to renew your mind to God’s truth about you. Choose a few, or all, and read them daily for a month. Journal and meditate on these scriptures and ask the Lord to help you come into alignment with how He sees you. You can also find these truths throughout our materials, including EPIC Encounter “Message 4, Becoming Who You Truly Are.”1

Grow in knowledge of how God sees you and thank Him for it. Like the psalmist’s, our response to this blessed life in Christ is personalized in Psalm 139:14 (NASB) “I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.”
