“Listen, you heavens, and I will speak; hear, you earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.”
Deuteronomy 32:1-2
Just as we pray in the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew Chapter 6, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done,” we recognize that the Lord has plans and desires, too, for His purposes. He doesn’t reveal everything to us, but Deuteronomy 32:1-2 tells us how important it is to Him that He finds a tender heart in us. He wants to teach us His ways and reveal Himself and all His mysteries. In respectful relationships, the Lord desires to know us and make Himself known by us.
Have you ever become teary-eyed in a candlelight service singing “Silent Night” or “O Holy Night” or by observing an unexpected kindness from a child? There is something innocent and pure that we feel. That feeling is our heart opening to God’s beauty. The beauty of the Lord’s heart of love is irresistible. That’s the kind of heart that pursues Jesus, studies His teachings, receives His calling and impacts the world. We find we can hear Him better, see things through His compassionate eyes, love more as He does, be more obedient, and walk more confidently with greater faith from spending time with Him in worship and prayer.
As you prepare for a new year, think of ways that you can spend growing closer to Jesus. Ask Him to guide you in fellowship, study, and adventure. Schedule your time with Him. Then let Him show you amazing wonders and teach you things about creation. Ask Him daily, “What are the plans for us today, Lord?” He delights in a friendship based on a tender heart and is waiting for time with you.
