Isaiah 40:3 (NIV) “A voice of one crying: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’”
Proverbs 25:4 (NIV) “Remove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel…”
The Advent Season is a celebration of Jesus’ birth, focusing on different significant characters in the final days before the Messiah’s entrance into the world He was sent to redeem. It is a season to prepare our hearts for the entrance of Jesus into our personal lives. You may already follow weekly or daily Advent devotions, and this will be a bright star to top our personal celebrations!
Each one of us has been given spiritual gifts for the benefit of the Body of Christ. When we move in them, we shine a spotlight on Jesus, our Redeemer. Too often, we consider Ephesians 4:11 as our guideline for spiritual gifts, but it actually describes the callings of those in the body who serve in full-time, 5-fold ministry careers as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. This group is set apart to instruct, guide, and encourage the rest of the church with the spiritual gifts they have been anointed in to serve Jesus by serving others.
In Romans 12, Paul exhorts the body not to compare gifts, but to understand that our different uses in service may stir up the Holy Spirit’s gifts of prophecy and prayer; ministry; teaching; encouraging through exhortation; giving to support expansion of the gospel; diligent leadership; and acts of showing Christ’s love through mercy. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul extends his list to include the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, gifts of faith, healings, the working of miracles, the discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.
The Holy Spirit releases these gifts and guides us in their timely use. He often makes divine opportunities for them showcased within our talents, such as playing music, singing, speaking, administration, counseling, etc. The body of Christ needs these gifts and talents to accomplish the Lord’s work in the earth.
As you prepare to celebrate Christmas this year, go beyond decorating, gift-giving, and planning your festivities. Consider the ways the Lord has used you to meet another’s needs before. Didn’t it feel good? Offer your gifts and talents as preparation for His holy birthday. Seek Him each day and make yourself available to be used to minister to someone He decides. You will be a disciple who sees the purposes of Jesus come alive before you! As C. S. Lewis would point out, Aslan is on the move. Take this time to let Him prepare you - because the risen Christ invites you to join Him in His eternal work!
