“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

“But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.” Psalm 33:11 (NIV)

Lately, I’ve encountered more excuses for why people are unable to do what they know God is directing them to do. Maybe it’s the scorching heat of August, or fitting school commitments back into schedules, or a massive buildup of “to-do” items skipped over during summer months. Whatever the underlying cause, skipping over our spiritual responsibilities is unwise, and the kingdom suffers each time we do it.

What do I mean by God’s “kingdom suffers?” He’s Almighty, Omniscient, and Omnipresent God, Creator of the universe that keeps expanding by the breath of His words! Jesus overcame death and hell, so how can this be? I mean that our unresponsiveness to His plans and instructions hurts His kingdom on earth – those of us who follow Jesus. Our delay or refusal to respond holds us and other believers from blessings like knowledge and discipleship that free us to gain our identity and inheritance in Christ.

In Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV), a scripture often quoted to encourage in troubling times, we are told, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The Lord’s plans are good, and the race of our lives is worth giving our all for His glorious purposes. When He instructs us to pray without ceasing, we, the kingdom, benefit by staying in a prayerful mode and lifting needs to Him as they arise throughout the day. When He guides us with our finances, we, our church, communities, and ministries are blessed and advanced by our tithes and offerings. Supporting missions and the Great Commission lead people to Jesus and advance the kingdom eternally.

Our Lord has multiple purposes in asking us to partner with Him in His tasks – and they are intentionally linked with a personalized plan prepared just for us! He uses them to disciple us, teach us, develop Christian character in us, and release spiritual giftings as we run our race. Our service to another’s need may bring us healing for our own wounds, fear, or doubt. Discipling another steadies our own beliefs. Praying for healing and provision release gifts of faith in us.

So, no excuses! Get up and run your race for Jesus’ glory!
